Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of women running service-based businesses – consultants, trainers, creatives, advisors, and specialists who are excellent at what they do. And yet, many of them tell me the same thing:

“I know I’m good at what I do, I just don’t always get seen, chosen, or trusted at the same level.”

She Starts Smart was created to address that gap. Not by creating another directory. Not by asking women to shout louder. But by building a trusted, values-led platform that makes it easier for individuals and businesses to buy from female-led service providers with confidence.

Why I’m Building She Starts Smart

We know the headline statistic:
If women had the same opportunities as men, they could contribute £250 billion more to the UK economy.

But opportunity doesn’t just mean funding or policy. It also means access to customers, visibility, and trust.

Right now:

  • Buyers want to work with ethical, values-led businesses
  • Corporates are under pressure to diversify their supply chains
  • Women-led service businesses struggle to cut through noise and credibility barriers

She Starts Smart sits at the intersection of those challenges.

What She Starts Smart Is

At its core, She Starts Smart is a Check-a-Trade–style platform for women-led, service-based businesses, built on trust, transparency, and values.

Every business on the platform will:

  • Apply to be listed, rather than automatically joining
  • Be assessed against a clear set of standards around ethics, integrity, and equality
  • Be reviewed by an independent advisory board
  • Receive feedback whether they are accepted or not

This isn’t about gatekeeping, it’s about credibility. When someone buys through She Starts Smart, they should feel confident that:

  • The business has been vetted
  • Values run through the entire platform
  • They are supporting quality, not just good marketing

Trust, Visibility, and a Recognised Badge

Every business accepted onto She Starts Smart will receive a She Starts Smart Verified badge to share on their website, proposals, and social channels. The badge signals that the business has been independently reviewed and aligns with the platform’s core values of ethics, integrity, and equality. For buyers, it creates instant trust. For founders, it provides visible credibility that travels with them beyond the platform itself.

How the Platform Works

Once accepted, businesses won’t just be “listed and left”.

We’ll work with each founder to understand:

  • Who their ideal customer really is
  • What type of work they want more of
  • Whether they’d like to be introduced to corporate clients, partnerships, or supply chains

Using this information, the platform will be designed so that:

  • Buyers landing on She Starts Smart are matched to the right businesses
  • AI helps connect customers with providers who genuinely fit their needs
  • Businesses are seen by the right people, not everyone, everywhere

The aim is relevance, not volume.

What I’m Trying to Achieve

She Starts Smart isn’t just a platform, it’s a movement.

I want to:

  • Encourage individuals and organisations to actively buy from women-led service businesses
  • Help corporates find trusted female suppliers more easily
  • Track and evidence the income generated through the platform
  • Create data that shows the real economic impact of choosing women-led businesses

If we want to change outcomes, we have to measure them.

A Community, Not Just a Listing

She Starts Smart is not designed to be a passive directory. Every accepted founder will be part of a curated community of women-led service businesses who share similar values and standards.

The community will be a space for:

  • Peer connection and collaboration
  • Sharing opportunities, insights, and introductions
  • Learning from one another without noise or competition
  • Feeling part of a collective movement, not just a platform

The goal is simple: when one woman wins, the impact should ripple, not stop.

How She Starts Smart Will Be Funded

To keep the platform sustainable and accessible, we’re exploring a blended model:

  • A small admin or membership fee for listed businesses
  • Potential transaction fees on work generated through the platform
  • Corporate and brand sponsorship, aligned with the platform’s values

Nothing is fixed yet, this is why I’m asking for input.

Who I’m Speaking To

I’m particularly keen to hear from women running service-based businesses who:

  • Care about ethics, quality, and integrity
  • Want more aligned, better-fit clients
  • Would value visibility with credibility, not just exposure
  • Are open to being part of something bigger than individual gain

And buyers or corporate decision-makers who:

  • Want to diversify their supplier base
  • Value ethical procurement
  • Want a trusted route to finding female-led service providers
